Before You Set a Goal:

I love training and teaching people life and emotional skills. I am now also getting certified as a life coach and saw that my methods of training and coaching on goal setting is a bit different than other coaches’ style. The reason is because there are two things, I believe we should start with before we can set a goal, let alone achieve it.
The first thing is that you must know yourself very well, find out what your values are. Your values reveal who you are, but also what you want for your life What you want to be remembered for. The reason you need to do this first is so that you can have goals that align with your dreams and values, so you are sure about what you stand for and the direction you are going to move into.
The second reason is so that your goals can be as unique as you are. I encourage my clients to not just stick with universal goals e.g. money, career, weight or health goals. I think you can and should have these goals too but let’s take an example of a young man who has a bad internal attitude, he wants big biceps so he can attract a woman. This young man might achieve his goal, but his bigger biceps will not help him attract quality females, because there are other areas he also needs to work on. (We see this example in most Romantic Comedy movies). Universal goals are exactly that, universal. If you want to really set yourself apart, get honest about your weakness and strengths, ask yourself why you want to achieve a specific goal and you will find a deeper need that you should address first.
Remember you can really have everything you ever wanted, but it starts with taking care of yourself, healing yourself first. You cannot rescue a victim if you are also a victim. When you set goals, set goals for all areas of your life, not just for your career. Break all your goals down into small, to-do list type of actions.
