Why Training is like Medication

Sometimes when doctors diagnose an illness let’s say for example a cold or flu. They prescribe medication that relieves the symptoms of the illness E.g. Fever. In the same way, when companies assess their training needs on for example passive or tardy employees, they choose to offer training that relieves the symptoms E.g. Time Management courses.

In both cases, although this is helpful, the deeper issues often get missed or untreated. That’s why training on Ethics, Life Skills and Emotional Intelligence is so important. Almost all human flaws, errors or lack of growth stem from the lack of (or not applying of) these skills.

· Emotional Intelligence training includes training on topics such as Self-awareness, Self-Regulation, Motivation, Empathy, Social Skills, Critical Thinking & Problem Solving.

· Life Skills according to the world health organisation are: Self-awareness, Empathy, Critical thinking & Creative thinking, Decision making & Problem-Solving, Assertiveness & Equanimity, Stress & Emotional control, here we can see that Emotional Intelligence training and life skills training are very similar, overlap and that Emotional Intelligence training is the upgraded version of life skills training and Emotional Intelligence is also the underlying skills required for leadership and new venture training.

· Ethics training is like the how-to aspect of applying Emotional intelligence and life skills. It shows us what our attitude and practical methods should be and unites values.

So, for example, when we address Motivation you also address Stress & Burn Out which is one of the underlying reasons why employees become passive and tardy, not because they suddenly don’t know how to manage their time. Time Management training should be and is a part of Emotional Intelligence training (it would typically be addressed under problem-solving and critical thinking skills).

I read this hilarious but applicable joke:

“A question was asked in a seminar: Why don’t employees discuss their problems and frustrations with their management? One of the participants who is an employee responded: You cannot discuss your Malaria problems with the Mosquito. “

This joke proves to me that employees don’t always know what the route cause of their problems at work is, they themselves, as well as their management or company, can only see the symptoms. Therefore ELE (Ethics, Life Skills & Emotional Intelligence) Training is so crucial for companies to implement and provide for their employees.

As Always, Keep Improving,
