I recently bought myself a copy of the Psychology handbook, it gives the history of various types of psychologies. I saw one statement and it prickled my curiosity to a very big point. “Insight may cause blindness” I googled the term and came up with the most amazing things regarding assumptions. The assumption is not insight. Insight defined: “the capacity to gain an accurate and deep understanding of someone or something.”
This meant to me that insight is identifying the truth. Then the following dawned on me: our eyes see the truth. I asked Marilize Le Roux from De Jongh optometry, to answer a few questions regarding the eye and sight. Marilize has B.Optom (RAU) FOA (SA) qualifications.
Marilize confirmed almost immediately this interesting truth that the eye organ reflects light to be able to see. It is not possible for anyone to be able to see if a form of light does not reflect in the eye. We see this, especially for example with Cataracts.
According to Wikipedia: “A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye which leads to a decrease in vision. Cataracts often develop slowly and can affect one or both eyes. Symptoms may include faded colours, blurry vision, halos around light, trouble with bright lights, and trouble seeing at night. Cataracts are the cause of half of blindness and 33% of visual impairment worldwide.”

Thus, I concluded that light which resembles the truth is the purpose of the human eye. The eye’s purpose is to see and seek the light or truth. Our eyes help us to see silent communication and beauty. Marilize said that because the eye and sight is one of our senses, we experience the world through our senses, thus the loss of a sight limits silent communication. People who lose sight loses independence, security, joy, wonder. The most common people she treats for loss of sight is illnesses of old age, they treat these conditions in a preventative manner, by monitoring every person regularly, they can determine quickly if there are problems. When a patient went for loss and trauma counselling and have started to accept their loss, Marilize can help them to focus on the remaining sight if any. Because there is a lot of aids like talking cell phone’s etc. It is very difficult to help people who are struggling to accept their loss.
I remember when I went for my eye test and they told me I need glasses. I cried for weeks because I was scared that wearing spectacles will make me ugly, unattractive or weird, I was afraid that I will no longer fit in with my friends. Luckily by the time my first spectacles arrived, I was convinced by my parents and optometrist that it makes me look even more beautiful. My friends at school did ask about my spectacles, but they did not judge me. I was luckily still accepted. A few years later, I started wearing contact lenses and my confidence soared.
It is difficult to accept image issue’s because your senses are different to others, how difficult must it be to lose those senses? We always have something to be grateful for in life. Gratefulness is one of the best ways to start accepting a loss. Maybe I don’t have perfect vision, but I am perfectly unique. Maybe someone can’t see anymore, or ever, but the thing I can challenge you to do, is to start being thankful for everything you do still have. Can you feel, smell, hear etc? do you still have people who love you? If you are or were rejected because of your shortcomings, 1. The people who left you, don’t deserve you anyway. 2. I firmly believe God will send you new people. 3. You can still have a big effect on your community- just email me and I will introduce you to someone I know who can’t see much anymore but still runs a business and is a huge inspiration to a lot of people. If your eyes have such an important purpose, can you imagine what major purpose you as a person have?
