There are a few quotes I read about not having expectations so that you won’t get disappointed or become unhappy. But I found that we must have huge (BHAG) expectations. Having high expectations results in achieving excellence. Excellence is a word perfectionists love, and although I don’t think it’s healthy to get stuck on the image of excellence, if none of us strive for excellence, our world would be in serious trouble. The truth is we should learn to accept any outcome to lesson the blows of disappointment, not lower or take away our expectations.

A part of having faith is to have expectation. Our thoughts can create our reality. So, expectation is a very necessary tool to success. But expectation requires us to also act. I drafted what I dream of for my business in a collage. It is a physical representation of my expectations. I created the clients I want to help, I gave them category’s, names, areas, what needs they have and how I am going to help them, what I want to gain from them, what I want to implement and improve in my service for them etc. I included as many details in my collage as possible. I made it with creativity and love. I keep it beside my bed to pray for them and look over every day. I ask and tell people around me I associate with exactly who I am looking for, what I want to do for them and what I want to gain from them. I believe soon most of those will be mine and it will happen. It is my expectation and it gives me a sense of urgency and motivates me.

If I do miss the mark, I can accept this knowing that I made every effort to meet my expectations. There is a saying aim for the moon and land on the stars. And yes, there will always be a real possibility to fail, but if we don’t try at all, we have already failed. If I aim for my high expectations, I am taking actions and thus making a difference. Often doing nothing is just as and even more dangerous than acting. Acting and preparing to receive our expectations is a physical form of faith. If Thomas Edison gave up, we would not have lights. If Alexander Graham Bell gave up, we would not have phones. We cannot give up just because we fear disappointment. Emotion is the main ingredient to passion and motivation. If you can feel and connect emotions with your expectation, your expectations will grow. If you can have a deep sense of resolve regarding what you want to achieve, you will eventually achieve it.

Lazy people tell others that they are obsessed. But obsessed people have high expectations of success and high adaptability to failure. I found that I am always happy. For me happiness is not an emotion, it is a result from either expectancy or adapting. How I see happiness is to accept any outcome regardless of your expectation of the outcome. And of course, when I do win I celebrate the victory with enthusiasm. Win or lose, we get to chose to be happy. The amazing part is that the happier I become within myself and choosing to be happy no matter the outcomes, the more my expectation and results in them grow. Disappointment can only knock us down if we allow it to.
