As a young girl I was often told I have a strong-will, from my teens I was called rebellious and thereafter as a young adult, determined. Even as a young working woman, I did not have many obvious talents, but my father always boasted about how hard working and disciplined I am.

I love exercise and I used to gym a lot from a young age. I enjoyed it because I could use my huge amount of will power and consistent routinely discipline. I enjoy adrenaline activities, because I am someone who loves using my ability to put mind over matter. I have always been a risk taker. I work with wage earners to help them become motivated and engaged in their work. I teach them basic soft-skills that helps them to become successful. But unfortunately, there are two characteristics, I can’t really teach people. Because it is not teachable skills. These are discipline and determination.

Motivation meaning: a reason for acting in a way

Inspire: fill someone with the urge/ability to do/feel something.

Determination meaning: having a firm decision and being resolved not to change it.

Self- Discipline meaning: the ability to control one’s feelings and overcome weaknesses.

To me discipline means a little bit more than the dictionary meaning. To me discipline is to never stop doing the small tasks that builds into your success. It boils down to routine and the mindset that helps one do these small tasks consistently, even if you don’t feel like doing it. Make your tasks such a routine that when you don’t feel like doing it, you barely noticed that you already did it. Repetition in discipline is a key for me.

The second thing I can’t really teach people, but I try to do so anyway, is determination. This is because determination requires an individual to make the decision. Unless I decide to want to do something and really put my emotions behind it, I would not be determined. Determination may begin in our thoughts as a decision but it’s a very personal thing. It’s something that is intertwined with your authentic self. It’s something that only an individual can tap into. For me it may be easier than most people to remain determined once I have decided (which takes me longer to make the decision to begin with). Because my life is so dramatic and I have responsibilities which means giving up is never an option for me. Giving up to me would run very high risks and could even lead to destruction. This sense of urgency is the driving force behind my determination.

How to create a sense of urgency:

1. Use your fear of pain. Wanting to avoid pain should get you up and going.

2. Use joy, think about how happy or relieved you will feel once you achieve your goal.

3. Use positive and negative consequences (punishment for not doing the tasks or rewards for achieving a goal)

4. Use time and deadlines. Remember your time is very valuable and should not be wasted.

5. Get someone you admire to keep you accountable. (There are some people we look up to that we could not imagine what it would feel like to disappoint them)

6. Be present minded. – When you live in the present in your thoughts, everything in the moment is important and thus urgent. You also have control over your emotions when you have a present mindset.

7. Try to think or reason one or two steps ahead of your task in order to achieve excellence of the current task, anticipating the next step helps you to prepare for it.

8. Challenge yourself, allow yourself to enjoy friendly competition.

If you want to succeed you need to tap into determination (making the decision to not give up) and discipline (doing small tasks that puts you closer to your goals every single day), and if you happen to need motivation or inspiration. Pop me an email.
