How to practice simplicity:

Sometimes people don’t realize or see what they need to work on regarding self-improvement. This isn’t because we aren’t emotionally intelligent or self-aware. We can be very self-aware and still not realize some of the smaller differences or weaknesses we have in comparison to others. This is because these things have become such a big part of who we are, it is almost subconsciously that we do them.
I recently was made aware that I tend to complicate everything I communicate. I don’t have a habit of simplifying. I find making things simple very difficult. Why do other people simplify things and why do I complicate them? The answer that came to me is that I grew up in a house full of highly intelligent people. In order not to be left out of conversations, I would over compensate by making simple things sound complicated. Thinking that it makes me sound more intelligent. I think the reason other people simplify things is so other people who are less intelligent can understand what is being said. But then I saw the reason people dislike my over complications. It frustrates them and leads them to think I have insecurities or don’t have healthy boundaries. This led me to the final part of a very complicated story.
How does one learn to simplify things (and still come across as intelligent)?
1. Discern what is the truth or basic underlying principle you wish to communicate.
2. Focus on one task at a time
3. Stay present minded
4. Have goals or to-do lists with deadlines
5. Set and stick to healthy boundaries
6. Get rid of distractions or influences of lesser value e.g. Facebook
7. Set a dedicated time for thinking and reflecting (don’t allow yourself to think or over think outside of this time)
8. Speak less, listen more
9. Write down what you want to say and cut the fat.
10. Appreciate being quiet
11. Isolate 1 simple question to answer
12. Organize information in relation to importance
The benefits of simplifying:
1. Enhances the quality of our overall lifestyle
2. You get to focus on what you value
3. Things become clear and obvious
4. Other people understand you easier
This is how I address my own self development when areas of improvement get revealed to me and this is how I plan to implement simplifying.
