My friend who is a financial planner, told me that in his profession the rule of the shoemaker doesn't apply.

The saying goes that a shoemaker’s shoes aren't whole. In other words, the shoemaker is so busy repairing other people’s shoes to repair her own.

Who would trust a financial planner wearing jeans and t-shirts or who doesn't drive a luxurious car with their finances? Few people would. Because if a financial planner doesn't dress professionally or doesn't have a luxurious car it reflects that the financial planner is unsuccessful.

So, I put it into practice, for a whole week, I dressed the part of a successful female executive.

I noticed some improvement in the way people reacted towards me. They appreciate it when you take care of yourself. As for an increase in credibility I experienced a 6/10 improvement regarding how credible people seemed to think I am. This counts as improvement worth sharing. If you don’t want to dress attractively, don’t. But dress up to be credible.

You don’t have to be super credible looking every single day, you can adapt the creditability wardrobe to fit your role, career or specific events you need credibility in. E.g. Mum clothes for mum events, creative clothes for creative events, casual for the family braai and modest and neat for the office, business suits for meeting with clients etc.
